Three dimensions of Dordt

Dordrecht is a city of many faces. Traditionally a true trading city on the water, it is inextricably linked to religious faith and ‘Dordt’ has a strong bond with the Orange-Nassaus.

If you take a VVV (tourist information) walk through the city centre, there’s no avoiding these themes.

From the Groothoofd, you get a view of the three-river point one of the busiest waterway junctions in Europe.

Where to start in a city with such a rich history? Perhaps behind the city gate at the Groothoofd from where you can look out over the Old Meuse River, the Noord and the Merwede. In the 14th century, the city’s location on the water gave rise to flourishing trade and the warehouses in the Wolwevershaven are tangible proof of this. Other Dordrecht icons include the Grote Kerk with its squat steeple and the numerous gardens, such as the Regentenhof and the Lenghenhof.

Hey, did you know?

Be sure your walk includes a visit to the Dordrechts Museum, where you’ll find a huge collection of paintings from the 17th century right up to the present day. The work of Ary Scheffer, a romantic painter born in Dordrecht, features prominently.
