Sweeping seascape

Climbing the Texel Lighthouse marks a high point, both literally and metaphorically.

At the top you are 47 metres above sea level so the seemingly endless views are spectacular. On a clear day you can see Vlieland and sometimes even Terschelling.

“The Texel Lighthouse is the only lighthouse that gives you views of the sea from three sides.”

Did you know that Texel Lighthouse is the only lighthouse in the Netherlands that gives you views of the sea from three sides? This makes the 118-step climb to the top of the spiral staircase well worthwhile. Once on the gallery, you forget all that effort: what a phenomenal view! In addition to the nearby islands, you also get a good view of the Robbengat, which separates Texel from Vlieland and is the most dangerous channel in the Netherlands. Countless shipwrecks bear testimony to this.

Hey, did you know?

If you're not keen on heights, there are plenty of things to see and do on the ground floor. Info boards tell the story of the lighthouse's 1864 construction and explain about the dangerous coastal waters. The bullet holes in the wall of the tower are a reminder of the battle that was fought here during World War II.
