What most holidaymakers do as soon as they step off the ferry is head for Tijs Knop, Zeelen or Haantjes to rent a bicycle: the best means of transport for exploring the island. Why not pedal from West-Terschelling to Midsland and drop in at De Ouwe Smidte for a coffee?
De Ouwe Smidte coffee, tea and chocolate specialist is at the end of Midsland’s shopping and restaurant street. They roast coffee beans every week and sell delicious bonbons. The ships’ timbers and the old forge give away the fact that it used to be a blacksmith’s workplace. If you decide to cycle to Midsland, you have three options: the southern mudflat route, along the main road linking all the villages or through the forest and dunes along the North Sea coast.
Nice to know!
West-Terschelling is the largest village on the island, followed by Midsland, Hoorn and Lies. The narrow island, thirty km long and 5 km wide, boasts around 70 km of cycle paths taking in dunes and rural roads across the countryside and a stunning route along the mudflat coast.
