Maritime Masters and More @ The National Maritime Museum

If there’s one museum with the perfect location, it’s certainly The National Maritime Museum.

This museum is situated in ‘s Lands Zeemagazijn, a listed warehouse from 1656 that served as storage for the war fleet. Nowadays, you can see paintings from maritime masters and ship models here.

Don’t remember when the Dutch East India Company was founded, are you curious what life was like aboard a ship or would you like to see age-old atlases and global maps? The museum’s crowning jewel, the replica of the famous Dutch East India Company ship the ‘Amsterdam’ is still moored outside. Certainly worth your while!

Globes weren’t just bought by scholars and merchants but were also used on ships for navigational purposes. Around 1600, globes were in huge demand. Famous globe makers in the Netherlands were Willem Blaeu and Jodocus Hondius. The museum also has a rare celestial globe by Hondius.
