Labyrinth of rivulets

Just a ten-minute drive from the centre of Dordrecht takes you to the Biesbosch, a beautiful national park dominated by a maze of rivers, islands with willow forests and whimsical creeks with crystal clear water.

One of the best ways of exploring the Biesbosch is in a canoe or whisper boat, which you can sail through a maze of rivers and whimsical creeks.

Although there are several ways of exploring the Biesbosch National Park, doing so in a canoe, kayak, rowing boat or whispering boat, available for hire at the visitor centre is certainly the most fun. You get a navigation chart of the area pointing out the best places to moor for a picnic or walk. Be sure to pack your binoculars because you may be lucky enough to spot a kingfisher, spoonbill or bluethroat. Under the supervision of the forester, you can also track beavers.

Hey, did you know?

The Biesbosch National Park is Europe’s largest freshwater tidal area. Lying between the Nieuwe Merwede and the Amer rivers, it owes its name to the rushes (Dutch: biezen) which were the first plants to grow there.
