Hidden mini zoo @ Artisklas

Something even lots of locals don’t know is that Haarlem-Noord has a hidden zoo. In fact it’s the smallest official zoo in the Netherlands.

You can see the different animals in four tent-shaped huts and in the grounds. Time for a visit!

Have you ever seen a degu? You can get to know this rodent, together with many other animals at Artiklas.

Don’t expect to see elephants and giraffes because this zoo is to small for them. However, you will see other unusual animals, such as raccoons and skunks. Have you ever seen a degu? You can get to know this rodent, together with the American mink and Chinese rock squirrel at Artiklas. The reptiles are housed in one of the zoo’s four tent-shaped huts. You can also see Haarlem’s only diorama, consisting of eight habitats with their corresponding stuffed animals.

Artiklas started 1964 in a stall belonging to a former Artis employee who wanted to teach the neighbourhood children about animals. Ten years later, Artiklas found a home in Haarlem-Noord and it’s now the smallest official zoo in the Netherlands and run entirely by volunteers.
