Friesland’s Story

Step into a Hindelooper room, discover the mystery surrounding Mata Hari, get face to face with Grutte Pier’s long sword and admire treasures from the Frisian mounds.

In the Fries Museum, this all and more tells the story of the wayward province of Friesland and its inhabitants. From the eleven cities to archaeological findings from the Frisian mounds to the long sword of resistance fighter Grutte Pier: the Fries Museum tells the story of Friesland.

"Bûter, brea en griene tsiis wa’t dat net sizze kin is gjin oprjochte Fries."

With this infamous statement, resistance fighter Grutte Pier managed to distinguish the Dutch from the Frisians. He is reckoned to be one of the greatest heroes in Frisian history, because he fought for an independent Friesland in the 16th century. In the Fries Museum, you’ll learn all about this farmer from Kimswerd and other typical Frisian themes such as the eleven cities, traditional costumes and the Frisian mounds.

Hey, did you know?

The Fries Verzetsmuseum is also part of the Fries Museum. Here, you’ll meet children who were brought to the Frisian country side to convalesce during the Dutch famine.
