In ‘Haarlemmerhout’, Haarlem’s age-old city park, there’s plenty to do. You can relax, walk and discover monumental trees. For kids, there’s petting zoo and deer camp De Houthoeve, which you certainly shouldn’t miss.
Goats, sheep, cows, rabbits, guinea pigs, mini pigs and lamas: you’ll see them all at De Houthoeve in ‘Hout’, as the Haarlem citizens also call their park. Of course, we mustn’t forget about the deer that started it all. The deer camp has existed since 1828. The petting zoo was added in 1967. There’s also a small playground. Hungry? Eatery Nurks in de Hout opposite the deer camp is a great place. Just like a fairy-tale pancake house!
Hey, did you know?
Eatery Nurks in de Hout was named after Robertus Nurks from the book Camera Obscura by writer Nicolaas Beets (pseudonym Hildebrand), who was born in Haarlem. Nearby the eatery, you’ll find the Hildebrand monument.
