Haarlem is a real garden city, which means it’s so nice to have lunch at Hofje Zonder Zorgen (carefree garden) a lunchroom housed in a 15th century building adjoining the Proveniers garden, which you can view from the tables at the rear of the establishment.
Hofje Zonder Zorgen is a popular place among locals to have lunch. You might even have to wait for a table if it’s busy. Fortunately, in summer there is more space because they put chairs out on Proveniersplein opposite the lunchroom. The wide-ranging menu lists pies, salads, juices, smoothies, soups and sandwiches. In other words, there’s a carefree choice, especially as everything is organic. It’s worth noting this is the place to be for high tea.
Hey, did you know?
Unlike Haarlem’s other gardens, the Provenier’s Garden was not intended for the poor. The residents here paid rent. There are 67 homes here, 38 of which are around the garden, with the rest along the adjoining streets.
