Bookstore made in heaven

An absolute must-visit in Maastricht is the Dominican Bookstore.

Housed in Dominican church that dates back over 700 years, Britain’s The Guardian newspaper hailed it ‘the fairest bookshop in the world; a bookshop made in heaven’.

“From the chancel you can sit down with a coffee and gaze in wonder at the huge rows of books.”

There is a good chance that this is the place you find the book you’ve been after for so long because beneath the ceiling of the Gothic church there are thousands of them. Even if you’re not a bookworm, it’s a great place to wander around. You can grab a coffee at Coffelovers in the former chancel.

Appropriately, the large reading table is in the form of a cross. Here you can take in the sight of the huge rows of books. Book presentations and exhibits are regularly held there.

Hey, did you know?

It may seem unlikely, but the Dominican Church has also been used as a bicycle shed and a carnival temple in the past.
