It's autumn and that means family time! Cosy game nights with a cup of tea, nice and warm by the fireplace. Outside, nature is preparing for winter, this is the time to go out and discover the wonders of autumn. Here are some of our favourite autumn activities in the Netherlands.

From 15 to 30 October, the world's biggest children's film and media festival for children, Cinekid, is back in the autumn holidays. For children aged between 3 and 14 (and parents, of course!) it is the place to be to be amazed. At the festival, you won't get bored. With the latest films and series for everyone, you dive into the most extraordinary and adventurous worlds. You will find the world's largest MediaLab with virtual games, digital artworks and media installations. The latest film and television productions are on show and there are various workshops. The Cinekid Festival can be found at more than 30 locations across the country and the main festival location is at Pathé Amsterdam Noord.
Combine it with a city trip to Rotterdam or Haarlem. Feel like having a drink or a bite to eat afterwards? Then be sure to come to Rotterdam's Witte de Withstraat or Haarlems Hofje!
Be amazed on a special walking tour by a brand new show full of mysterious surprises! Fairytale sounds coming from the trees and fascinating light projections create a magical spectacle. There are no fairy tale creatures or evil wizards bringing the park to life, everything comes from technology. Impressive and innovative gadgets provide a magical experience for both young and old. All this with nature as the backdrop.
You can find Grote Schijn in the Kralingse Bos in Rotterdam from 20 October to 6 November 2022. A visit to this event can be perfectly combined with our hostel in Rotterdam! Combine it, for example, with a sandwich ball at De Ballententent, or with drinks at, for example, Stan & Co.
You might know him: Jimmy Nelson. Jimmy Nelson has spent his entire life photographing original cultures and puts the people in front of his camera on a pedestal, giving extraordinary and often almost forgotten communities a worthy platform. His beautiful and extraordinary images are a tribute to diversity and different cultures. At Fabrique des Lumières in Amsterdam's Westerpark, Nelson's photographs are blown up to life-size proportions with a combination of photography, film, animation and sound. You can walk between the images. The exhibition takes place from 14 October to 13 November. There is also a frenzied exhibition of Gustav Klimt and Hundertwasser on show until 31 December.
Discover the world's first electronic dance music museum. Our House takes you on a 75-minute virtual journey through the music genre through interactive exhibitions, shows and performances. From a rebellious 'underground' scene to now a well-known international phenomenon. A fun experience for music lovers and budding DJs from 7 years and up!
For the 22nd time, the Bock Beer Festival will be organised at the Janskerkhof in Utrecht! From 14 to 16 October, you can enjoy 25 different bock beers, live music by Utrecht bands, beer tastings, a barbecue and of course lots of fun. Herfstbock is beer specially brewed for autumn. More than 25 different breweries will have their beer on tap during the festival. So plenty to choose from!
If you feel like making a full day of it, you can visit the Lombok district. A multicultural district with many unusual and exotic shops. End a day of shopping with a beer and music, that sounds good right?
Fancy a cultural activity for the family? Just a few minutes' walk from our Utrecht hostel you have the Museum Speelklok. Step into the wonderful world of self-playing musical instruments, from tiny music boxes and musical bells to street organs and orchestrions. Throughout the year, there is the Musical Tour and a Museum Expedition.
There are various cheerful and educational activities focusing on the children, and for the older ones it can be both a nostalgic and educational outing. When everyone has finished, you can have a nice lemonade or coffee in the Museum Café Klok. Feeling hungry? Then come to the Drieharingstraat. So much choice, success guaranteed :)
Preparation is key! Let the children make an autumn box at home from, for example, a painted egg box. During the walk, fill the box with beautifully coloured leaves, twigs, berries, acorns and chestnuts. With this collection you can make the most beautiful crafts such as necklaces, drawings or decorations like a colour fan! What you need for a colour fan: autumn leaves in all colours, large dark sheet of paper and some glue.
Looking for a bit more adventure? Climb to great heights in the Klimbos forest or watch the climbing skills of monkeys in the Apenheul; plenty of fun outings nearby during a stay at Stayokay Apeldoorn! Check out the special Wikkelhouses, for example.
All through October you can visit Julianatoren amusement park, entirely in Halloween theme! In less than half an hour you can reach the park from Stayokay Apeldoorn. The whole park is decorated and there are plenty of spooky things to discover. Don't worry, the park is not too scary. This way, you can visit the park with very small members of the family. For example, join Julia's Halloween Dance Lesson, the park's female mascot. She will teach you the steps of the dance 'Scary Creeps' and, of course, the mouse dance. Or go to Jul's Creepy Fest and dance with him!
Put on the rain boots and warm coats. When you step out of the door at Stayokay Dordrecht, you are immediately in De Biesbosch National Park! Stomp through the puddles and look for all the beautiful things autumn has to offer. Look carefully, even under autumn leaves or branches there might be something hidden! Take a magnifying glass and a mirror with you to make sure you don't miss anything. Look under a mushroom with a mirror and see the unique structure of the spores, but be careful! With the magnifying glass, take a closer look at the bark of a tree, how many critters can you see?
Prefer an activity with a little less risk of getting rained on outside? How about a Real Escape Room with your friends or family, or read more fun activities for a family holiday.
